Calculate your Body Mass Index and determine your health category
The Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator helps you determine whether your weight falls within a healthy range based on your height. It is widely used by healthcare professionals as a quick screening tool for weight categories such as normal weight, underweight, overweight and obesity.
Understanding your BMI is an important step in assessing your overall health and identifying potential health risks related to weight. Our calculator supports both metric and imperial units for your convenience.
The Formula:
For imperial units: BMI = (weight in lbs / height in inches²) × 703
📊 Example:
If a person weighs 70 kg and is 1.75 m tall:
BMI = 70 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75)
BMI = 70 ÷ 3.0625
BMI ≈ 22.9 (Normal Weight)
Underweight (BMI < 18.5):
Weight is below the healthy range, which may increase risk of certain health conditions.
Normal Weight (BMI 18.5 - 24.9):
Weight falls within the healthy range for your height.
Overweight (BMI 25 - 29.9):
Weight is above the healthy range, which may increase health risks.
Obese (BMI ≥ 30):
Weight is significantly above the healthy range, which may increase serious health risks.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
BMI is a general screening tool but doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes may have high BMI despite being healthy. Consult healthcare professionals for personalized assessment.
What should I do if my BMI is outside the normal range?
Consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice. They can help you develop a plan for achieving a healthy weight through diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes.
Does BMI apply to children?
BMI calculations are different for children and teens. Age and gender are considered. Use age-specific BMI charts for children under 18.
